WEST COAST MORNINGS by Carmen Sihota

Growing up, all I ever wanted to be was spontaneous. I still admire my friends who go with the flow, and I live vicariously through them. It took me 21 years to finally realize there's nothing wrong with structure and loving routine - especially when spontaneity makes me feel anxious. Creating a morning routine was one of the best things I ever did for my mental health and was a fun way to embrace my high functioning anxiety.

Whether you're an early riser (like me) or roll out of bed after 12 pm, having a routine when you wake up can improve your mood and day. Following a healthy morning routine develops the power of self-discipline, good habits, and a stronger and positive mindset.

I start my days by waking up and immediately opening my blinds. Whether sunny or rainy, getting natural light helps wake me up. I also have a beautiful view of the BC mountains, so I get to see the orange and pink sunrise behind the mountains if I'm up early enough! I then brush my teeth, do my skincare, and drink some water while making my bed. These are my non-negotiables; they have to be done every morning. Below is a list of other activities I like to do in the mornings! Sometimes I have time for many activities; other times, I can only do one. Allowing myself to choose helps me not get bored of my routine and gives me some flexibility in the morning.

  • going to the gym
  • yoga
  • meditating
  • journaling
  • reading
  • editing photos
  • cleaning up my living space
  • going for a walk by the beach (benefit of living on the west coast!)
  • going for a quick hike
  • creating my to-do list for the day

I try to not go on my phone until breakfast. Some days I don't do anything listed above. Instead, I make a super delicious breakfast and take extra time to do my makeup. The best part of a morning routine is that it's yours. Choose what YOU want to do! It is your "me-time" and a form of self-care. Thanks to my morning routine, I experience less stress and have more time to take care of my mental and physical well-being before my busy days! Some days, I do this by lighting up a candle. What does your morning routine look like?
